Super Easy Delicious Meatball Tajine

Meatball tajine by Mokchikrose

This meatball tajine is full of flavor cooked in perfectly seasoned and irresistibly delicious tomato based sauce. It’s super easy to make. You can serve this Moroccan-inspired dish with crusty bread, dipping it into the sauce and scooping up meatballs by hand.

I’m serving it with rice. It’s so good as the rice soaks up flavor-packed sauce and juicy meatball to complete the meal. I’m going to show you how to make this super-delicious meatball tajine that you’ll be making it on repeat.

You can use tajine pot. I just broke my clay tajine pot base unfortunately. The lid of my tajine pot is still intact. I would recommend that you use cast iron tajine pot for durability and easy maintenance.

Steps To Making Meatball Tajine

To summarize the video above, these are basic steps to making meatball taking.

  1. In a large bowl, mix together mince meat, 1 tbsp onion powder, 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1 tsp cinnamon powder, 1 tbsp cumin and 1/2 cup of water.
  2. Saute diced onion and chopped garlic until translucent. Add crushed tomato and 500ml water
  3. Shape the minced meat into small meatball and add into the sauce.
  4. Add 1 tbsp onion powder, 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1 tbsp black pepper, 1 tsp salt and 1/2 cup chopped coriander into the sauce mixture. Stir to combine.
  5. Cover the pan and cook for 15 minutes. Stir the famine every now and then, rotating the meatballs halfway for even cooking, until no longer pink.
  6. Add 5 eggs into the pan carefully over the meatballs, taking care not to break the yolks. Cover the pan and continue simmering the taine just until the whites are firm and the yolk is beginning to set.

Meatball Tajine Tips

  1. Add water to the meat mixture to moisten it to prevent the meat from drying out.
  2. To add eggs, create small pockets in the sauce, one for each egg. Drop gently each egg into a pocket. Cover and simmer over low heat until the eggs are cooked to your liking.
  3. You can serve this meatball tajine with couscous tossed in olive oil, or serve with baguette.
  4. If you are not a fan of coriander leaves, you can use fresh parsley instead.
  5. If you would like to add the olives at the end of cooking, you may want to reduce the salt when seasoning the tomato sauce.
